Elton's Story
18 year old Elton sat hunched over in the back seat of the car. His grey hoodie was knotted over his headphones. His eyes were tightly shut and he scowled as the tapped his leg to the rhythm of the music. He had only agree to come to this xxxxxxx meeting because his mother was nagging him so much. Now he had started to panic - he just couldn't face going in! Elton has high functioning Autism (formerly known as Aspergers)

His mother came in to the meeting. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she explained that she couldn't make Elton come in - that he had no friends, that others called him a weirdo and that he just didn't seem to fit in socially. As the meeting continued her tears changed to sighs of relief as she realised how people in the group understood and others had similar experiences to share.

We are a group of people who have family members who have high functioning Autism (formerly known as Aspergers). We share our experiences and listen to others. Over time people form bonds in the group and some even lead to friendships!

Eltons's Mam continued to attend the group. After a couple of weeks Elton came in for a few minutes and just listened. That's ok - we respect where everyone is at in their own life. With a little encouragement from us, he'll probably join in when he feels ready - that's our past experience.
If you or a family member have High Functioning Autism, you are welcome to come along to experience our group support and friendship.
